Hello. My name is Matthew Condliffe. I’m an attorney, but before practicing law, I was Staff Sergeant Condliffe. I served in the Army for over a decade and did deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Like many other veterans I know, I always thought that the wear and tear that we put on our bodies was just part of the job. That when you did what we did, you just had to accept that you would come home slightly broken—bad back, bad knees, and crappy hearing with that damned ringing in the ears—among other things.
Well, it turns out that at least one of those was preventable. We didn’t have to lose our hearing. Due to the possible fraud of a massive corporation, we weren’t protected the way we should have been.
Many of you may have already heard about the Army’s multi-million dollar settlement with 3M and the rash of individual cases that have sprung up as a result of this fraud coming to light. You may have thought that it didn’t apply to you or that it was some sort of scam.

I’ll be honest, I was a little taken aback when I learned about it, too. Initially, I couldn’t believe this could happen to me, to my buddies, to our Army. But it did. For over ten years, 3M sold the “Dual-Ended Combat Arms Earplugs, Version 2 (CAEv2),” or as I always called them, my “tactical plugs,” knowing that they didn’t actually protect the wearer’s ears. Now we have to live with the consequences.
Even as an attorney myself, I knew I wasn’t equipped to handle this on my own as mass torts and consumer protection law are specialized areas. So I did what the Army taught me to do: I reached out. As every NCO knows, it’s not about knowing everything; it’s about knowing who to ask. In this instance, I had the advantage of being an attorney and knowing how to find the people with the background and expertise to help me deal with this matter. Now I’m working with a team of experienced, knowledgeable attorneys who specialize in this area of law.
During all this, I also understood that I am not the only one who has been damaged by 3M’s actions, and that I’m in a unique position to help my fellow Vets and servicemembers. I am now working with a team to help get justice and just compensation for my fellow Veterans and anyone else who has been adversely impacted by this faulty hearing protection.
Please, if you or a loved one has been impacted by using the combat arms earplugs, reach out to us by clicking on the contact us link or by calling 301-732-7320. Let us help you get the justice you deserve and the compensation that you are owed for your sacrifice.
